Juan Pablo is a 10 year-old boy who lives with his mother Maria on the hills of Flor de Amancaes in Peru. His home is made out of wood and cardboard, and the roof is made out of corrugated iron and covered with plastic to protect against rain. Juan Pablo is cared for solely by his mother. Maria makes churros to sell in the parks and at the corner of nearby schools. This small income helps her cover their food and personal expenses, including her child's education.

Juan Pablo has progressed significantly since he started at CASP. Prior to his education with CASP, Juan Pablo was unable to accomplish even basic activities of daily living, which took a toll on his mother. Over the course of his education, Juan Pablo has been able to learn how to do tasks such as brushing his teeth and cleaning up after meals. This has been a relief for Maria, as they can now share domestic tasks.

María also participates in training sessions carried out in classroom and follows suggestions given by her child´s specialist in order to reinforce what he is learning in school. She involves her child in community activities, gives the necessary assistance to make him gradually achieve his independence, and focuses on her child´s abilities rather than his disabilities. Without CASP, Maria would not be able to effectively do all of these things.
